Why are Herkimer diamonds so special? Herkimer diamonds are not actually diamonds, they are naturally occurring double terminated quartz crystals, only found in New York State. "Double termination" means the crystal formed naturally with points at each end - and each one has a total of 18 points: 6 on each end (12) and 6 around the center. They are believed to have formed on the earth about 500 million years ago. Mother Nature at her best!
